Captain Redd's Guide To Caribbean Drinks
Captain Redd's Guide To Caribbean Drinks
Nobody's quite sure where Captain Redd is actually from. Ask him, and you'll get a different answer depending on the day, the drink in his hand, and how good the story needs to be. What's certain is that he showed up in St. Croix on a sailboat that wasn't his, headed nowhere in particular, and never found a good enough reason to leave. That was the better part of thirty years ago.
Since then, he's chased the trade winds across the Caribbean one island at a time, picking up a recipe here, a story there, and more sunburns than he'd like to admit. He's ordered the same drink four times in a Kingston bar just to work out the recipe himself. He's gotten stranded in Nassau during hurricane season and called it the best bartending education he never asked for. He's tasted his way through more beach shacks with no name and no menu than he can count, and somehow every single one of them handed him something worth remembering.
These days you'll find him running boat tours out of St. Croix by day, snorkeling trips to Buck Island and sunset sails for tourists who don't yet know they're about to have the best rum punch of their lives. By night, more often than not, he's behind the bar, sleeves rolled up, telling the same stories a little differently depending on who's listening.
He'll tell you he's not a chef, not a mixologist, and doesn't own a single fancy glass. What he's got is thirty years of tasting his way across the Caribbean, paying attention, and remembering what actually worked.
Captain Redd's Guide to Caribbean Drinks is his first book — thirty island favorites collected one bar at a time, written the way he'd tell it to you if you pulled up a stool.
He never planned on being an author. The recipes had other plans.
